A training level set in Lara's home of Croft Manor can be accessed from the start menu. The game is split into four zones: Peru, Greece, Egypt and the lost continent of Atlantis.

Tomb Raider is an action-adventure video game in which the player assumes the role of archaeologist-adventurer Lara Croft, who navigates through a series of ancient ruins and tombs in search of an ancient artefact. Gameplay Lara Croft retrieves the first piece of the Scion in the Tomb of Qualopec. A remake set in a new continuity, Tomb Raider: Anniversary, was developed by Crystal Dynamics and released in 2007. Following the game's success, numerous sequels were released, beginning with Tomb Raider II in 1997. Lara Croft herself became a cultural icon, rising to prominence as one of gaming's most recognisable characters.
The game is one of the best-selling video games for the PlayStation, with seven million units sold worldwide, and it remained the best-selling title in the Tomb Raider franchise until the release of the 2013 reboot. Reception of the game was very positive, with praise for its innovative 3D graphics, controls, and gameplay, and it went on to win several industry awards. Originally announced in 1995, the title went on to receive extensive press attention and heavy promotion from Eidos Interactive. The music was composed by Nathan McCree, who took inspiration from English classical music. The 3D grid-based level design, innovative for its time, was inspired by the structure of Egyptian tombs. The character of Lara was based on several influences, including Tank Girl, Indiana Jones and Hard Boiled. Production began in 1994 and took 18 months, with a budget of £440,000. The initial concept was created by Toby Gard, who is credited as Lara's creator and worked as lead artist on the project. Gameplay features Lara navigating levels split into multiple areas and room complexes while fighting enemies and solving puzzles to progress. The game follows archaeologist-adventurer Lara Croft, who is hired by businesswoman Jacqueline Natla to find an artefact called the Scion of Atlantis. It is the debut entry in the Tomb Raider media franchise. It was first released on the Sega Saturn, followed shortly by versions for MS-DOS and the PlayStation. The new Lara started as a more vulnerable character, but throughout the game quickly grew into the renowned Tomb Raider we all love. Square Enix and Crystal Dynamics introduced us to a brand new Lara Croft, and gave us a new origin story as well. Lara Croft and the Guardian of light was an interesting isometric game that released in 2010, holding fans over until the main event, when the Tomb Raider reboot launched in 2013. Legend, Anniversary and Underworld help bring Lara back into popularity and gave us some brand new adventures before fading away for a couple years yet again. Another title called The Prophecy would release on Game Boy Advance, before the series got an overhaul and formally made its way onto the PlayStation 2 with Angel of Darkness.Īfter a few years, Tomb Raider got another graphical improvement by moving to the PlayStation 3 and receiving a trio of games. Then the series also had a stint on the Game Boy Color with two different games, one simply titled Tomb Raider and the other called Tomb Raider: Curse of the Sword. The blocky polygons and textures were mind blowing back in the day, but they of course don’t hold up too well by today’s standards.

Lara Croft got her start way back on the PlayStation 1 in 1996, and the next three games would stick to the console while moving onto PC and the Dreamcast as well. Let’s take a look at just how much the series has changed, from the original PlayStation to the PlayStation 4. The series, and its protagonist Lara Croft, has been on a ton of different platforms and the look has fittingly changed throughout the years because of that. Tomb Raider is one of the biggest action-adventure series of all time, celebrating its 20th anniversary this year.
